There is a story to these images somewhere. At one level, it is about the basic connection between things… the fact that we just are. But there is a concrete story as well. A story about our lives.
Someone once told me that I don’t take many landscape photographs. At the time, I thought about the the broad vistas, mountains, etc. of many landscape photographs and generally agreed with the statement. I still agree but now wonder if it has something to do with what the images are saying and that there is a story (or stories) to be found.
Considering other photographic genres, there are both similarities/differences in landscape photography, documentary photography, photo journalism, and even street photography. The question of genre(s) shouldn’t get in the way but it can be useful to think about one’s overall intent. I have always felt that the principles of street photography can (and should) be applied to any kind of photography and the same is true with the others. I am finding that the story-telling aspect behind documentary photography and photo journalism is becoming more and more important/compelling to me. Is this where feeling comes from?
Minor White was known for putting much effort into the sequencing of images. One sequence can have a much different impact than another (or no impact). I would like spend more time exploring this idea. When I started this series, my intent was about writing and about finding my voice. Now I am finding that it is also helping me to see things.
I hope you all are doing well.
