Descent
The cold air descends
Into the valley at night
And waits for the sun
No Resistance
Clean burning and free
Doing just what is needed
With no resistance
Thoughts
Thoughts flow in my mind
Like a mail freight rushing past
Try not to jump on
Wilderness
Wind in the tree tops
A child builds a fairy house
Both pure wilderness
Atchafalaya
The water gurgles
As it drains from the bathtub
Atchafalaya
Journey
Snow rests on the ground
While on its journey back home
And the stream beds wait (The sky is patient)
One Drop
A raging river
Starts with one drop of water
That is found in all
Jumping Beans
My own anxious mind
Thoughts moving like jumping beans
And yet the sun shines
Waterfalls
Waterfalls happen
With the twisting of a wrist
The bathtub fills up
In the Middle of the Night
Snow slides off the roof
In the middle of the night
And a cat meows
Nature
Nature has its way
In every circumstance
No alternatives

The Call of an Owl
The call of an owl
Floats through the warm evening air
And sings mice to sleep
Walt Whitman — Least Heat-Moon — Self balanced

— William Least Heat-Moon quoting Walt Whitman in Blue Highways
William Least Heat-Moon — Blue Highways — Diligent Thought and Life
“To insist that diligent thought would bring an understanding of change was to limit life to the comprehensible.”
